To calculate and predict the increases in hailstorms, climate center scientists are trying first off, to get a big picture of hail events right here in the Rocky Mountain corridor. But this is hard because hail is measured by the damage leaves — to human dwellings, cars and crops — but shows nothing hail activity major thoroughfares where people live. Since hail falls randomly due to spiraling supercell thunderstorms up to 3 miles wide–it is hard to tell where or when it will fall. However, working together, Scientists and insurance companies, have developed cutting-edge tools, like artificial intelligence and drone surveillance with the goal of both predict and verifying hail damage.
Artificial Intelligence And Hail: National Center for Atmospheric Research scientists at the University of Oklahoma have developed over the last three years a machine-learning model to analyze images from storms and match them with actual measurements of temperature, pressure, wind speed and direction to see which storms produce hail and how big the hailstones are. “It can’t precisely predict hail yet but, machine-learning scientist John Gagne says [the new method] “has a lot of promise to help forecasters better predict a weather phenomenon capable of causing severe damage.”
Drones For Predicting Hail: Flying drones after thunderstorms can capture hail damage patterns. This is especially useful in un or under inhabited areas where the results simply cannot be analyzed on the ground before the hail melts.
However, don’t think that current human reporting doesn’t still play a huge part. For now, scientists still say–
“You get out your ruler and send us the photos,”
This is because weather scientists are still trying to develop models to project hail damage with different population scenarios based on current information and trends.
This wraps us our series on increasing hail in the Rocky Mountain, High-Plains and Hail Alley regions. We hope you take four things away from this blog:
- Hail is definitely on the rise
- This rise can be countered with increased awareness
- Scientists are developing ways to deal with the increase
- Contact United Hail Pros when you do get hit by hail to get the damage fixed via PDR, quickly and with no out of pocket expenses to you.
